Some artifacts that have been found in the area can be traced to early human inhabitants who lived as far back as six thousand years ago, making Fairfield one of the oldest Native American settlements in North California!
In 1835, a Mexican General named Vallejo conquered the Suisun Indians who lived in the region, but he was so magnanimous in the victory that Indian Chief Sem Yeto later became his ally and received the Rancho Suisun Mexican land grant. The land was later acquired by clipper ship captain Robert H. Waterman, who hailed from Fairfield, Connecticut and named the city after his hometown back East.
Waterman officially founded the town of Fairfield in 1856 and entered it in the race for the Solano County seat two years later, which it won. The city was formally incorporated in 1903, and in 1942 became home to Travis Air Force Base, amajorUnited States Air Force Base which was operational until 1966.
