Collision Mitigation Braking System™ Explained | Avery Greene Honda | Vallejo, CA

To help you feel more confident behind the wheel, many Honda models come standard or available with the Honda Sensing® suite of driver-assistance technologies. One of the technologies included in this suite is the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)*. But what, exactly, does this system do? This guide looks to define this advanced system, and explain how it works.

What is CMBS™?

CMBS® is a driver-assist technology that works to keep you more aware out on the road. It is essentially an automatic emergency braking system, which means that it will help reduce the likelihood of a collision with alerts and reduce the severity of an unavoidable collision. There are a lot of components that go into it to help it work.

How does it work?

This system uses the input from a combination of a millimeter wave radar sensor, which is mounted on the front grille, and a camera, which is mounted between the rearview mirror and the windshield, to keep track of what’s happening directly in front of your vehicle. It scans up to 330 feet ahead of you on the road, processing the data it receives in the blink of an eye. Through this data, it is able to detect if a collision is imminent, progressing through three courses of action.

First, it alerts the driver with visual and audio cues if a possible collision risk is detected. If this risk continues, then the second stage will allow your Honda to consider your safety, automatically applying the brakes lightly. This is the system’s attempt to mitigate the collision as much as possible, sometimes even helping keep the collision from happening at all.

Finally, if the driver still hasn’t taken a corrective action to avoid the collision, then the CMBS® will forcefully apply the brakes to help your vehicle avoid the collision or mitigate the forces from the collision.

Thanks to Honda’s Collision Mitigation Braking System™, you are less likely to get into a frontal collision, and less likely to withstand severe injuries when one does take place. Visit Avery Greene Honda to learn more about how Honda Sensing® can keep you and your loved ones safe.

*CMBS™ cannot detect all objects ahead and may not detect a given object; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed, and other factors. System operation affected by extreme interior heat. System designed to mitigate crash forces. Driver remains responsible for safely operating vehicle and avoiding collisions.
